2015 Volume Five
75% new and 25% used French oak barrels
Vintage 2015 was hot and dry, like 2007, from late spring through to final day of harvest. Due to the early flowering and hot June, vines produced tiny grapes. The small crop ripened early in the Fall with a high skin-to-juice ratio yielding black-colored wine dense with richness and tannin. 2015 in Washington is both lovely young and age worthy for decades.
"The 2015 harvest was record early at 115 days from flowering on September 26th. Hand harvesting and cluster sorting fruit we began tank fermenting at 60 degrees F peaking at 85 degrees F (16-30 degrees C). Daily mixings twice allowed the very ripe fruit to yield abundant color with smooth tannins extracted later to match the huge generosity of fruit flavors. After 15 days the wine was pressed and finished primary ferment in new French oak puncheons by Allary, Le Grand, and GAMBA. Remaining on original lees for 18 months allows the wine a roundness and savory tone complimenting the rich tannic style. We selected 8 puncheons of the 60 barrel harvest for the reserve bottled in August 2017." - Caleb Foster, Winemaker
